How long does it take a mobile tyre fitter to change a tyre?
A mobile tyre fitter typically takes 20 to 30 minutes to change a single tyre once the van is with you. Two tyres run to about 30 to 40 minutes, and a full set of four is usually 45 to 60 minutes. A puncture repair, where the damage is safely repairable, sits at the shorter end, around 30 minutes.
That is the same work a garage does, on the same equipment, done in your driveway instead of on a ramp. The reason it is not faster than a garage is that none of the steps can be skipped safely. The reason it is not slower is that you are not queued behind three other cars.
Where the time actually goes
For one wheel, the sequence is:
- Check and quote. Confirm the tyre size, look at the damage, and confirm the price you were given still stands.
- Jack and remove. Chock the car, lift it properly, break the wheel nuts, take the wheel off.
- Break the bead and strip the tyre. Get the old tyre off the rim without marking the alloy. This is the part that ruins wheels when it is rushed.
- Mount the new tyre. New valve fitted, tyre seated and inflated.
- Balance. The wheel spins on a proper balancer and weights go on where the machine says. Skip this and you get a steering wheel that shakes at 60 and a tyre that wears in patches.
- Refit and torque. Wheel back on, nuts torqued to the manufacturer’s figure rather than rattled up with a gun.
- Pressures and TPMS. Set the pressures for your vehicle and reset the sensor where it needs it.
Four wheels is not four times one wheel, because the jacking, the setup and the paperwork happen once. That is why a full set lands nearer an hour than two.
How long until the van arrives?
Fitting time is only half the answer. The bit that matters when you are standing at the side of the A9 is how long until somebody turns up.
We typically reach most of Tayside, Perthshire and north Fife within about 60 to 90 minutes, and often faster on the main routes: the A90, the A9, the M90, the Kingsway and the Tay Road Bridge are our daily patch. Rural Perthshire takes longer, and we will say so.
What you will not get is a hopeful ETA to keep you off the phone. Matt tells you where the van actually is. If it is going to be two hours, he says two hours, because a driver who knows the real number can make a sensible decision about whether to wait in the car or get somewhere warm.
How mobile tyre fitting works, start to finish
The whole process, from the call to driving away:
- You call, WhatsApp or send your registration. Reg is enough for us to work out the tyre sizes your vehicle takes.
- We confirm the size and quote. One all-in price, before anything is booked.
- We source the tyre. Any make, any budget, from local trade suppliers, usually the same day.
- We come to you. Home driveway, workplace car park, retail park, hotel, or the roadside. Wherever the car already is.
- We fit and balance on site. The van carries professional balancing equipment, so run-flats, low profiles and performance tyres are routine rather than a problem.
- You drive away. No drop-off, no collection, no second trip, no courtesy car to arrange.
That is the whole appeal of it. The car does not move, and neither do you.
Waiting for us: what to do
If you are at home or at work, nothing. Leave the car accessible, leave the locking wheel nut key where we can get it, and carry on with your day.
If you are at the roadside, safety comes before speed:
- Get the vehicle as far off the carriageway as you can, and put the hazards on.
- Get out and get behind the barrier, away from live traffic, especially on a dual carriageway or motorway.
- On a smart motorway with no hard shoulder, use an emergency refuge area if you can reach one, and call 999 if you cannot get out safely.
- Do not attempt a wheel change on the offside, next to moving traffic.
There is more on this in our guide to what to do with a flat tyre at the roadside.
What slows a job down
Three things account for nearly every overrun:
A locking wheel nut with no key. Lost keys and rounded nuts are the single most common hold-up in mobile fitting. We carry a removal kit and can get them off, but it adds time. See locking wheel nut removal.
A rare size. Common fitments are on a shelf ten minutes away. Unusual sizes, staggered setups and some run-flats have to travel further.
Wheel damage. A badly kerbed rim sometimes needs cleaning up before a new tyre will seal against it properly. That is worth the extra ten minutes; a tyre that will not hold air is not a finished job.
